For all (new) international students (Degree Seeker) with good German language skills

How does studying in Germany work? That’s what you can learn in our seminar for international students and gain ECTS points on the way!

Preparing a presentation? Active participation in seminars? Writing an academic paper? What are examination regulations? Everything is new and you don't know how to keep track of it? Would you like extra support, but your time is limited?

This is exactly why the ungraded module "International Student Orientation" was developed, with which you can even collect ECTS if you have MarSkills in your study regulations!

You can't be in Germany at the start of the semester? No problem, the seminar takes place online!

  • Who is the module for?

    • The module is primarily aimed at international Bachelor's students from all subject areas from the 1st semester onwards who have MarSkills in their study regulations, are studying in German and would like to obtain a degree at the Philipps-Universität Marburg ("Degree Seeker").
    • The module was developed especially for students who have previously been socialized in a different teaching and learning culture (e.g. have not obtained a degree from a German school in Germany or abroad). Exchange students cannot register for the module.
  • What will you learn in the module?

    • You will get to know the seminar, participation and presentation culture of a German university.
    • You will learn in a safe environment in your peer group and have the confidence to speak in German, even if you make mistakes.
    • You will learn how to organize your studies and arrival at university independently.
    • You get to know students from different subject areas and make new contacts.
    • You will expand important study-related skills such as information, research and self-reflection skills.
    • The seminar strengthens your self-confidence so that you can successfully complete your studies.
    • The seminar ends with an ungraded examination for which 3 ECTS are awarded. The 3 ECTS will be counted as credit points in your degree program.
    • Ideally, the seminar will have a positive effect on the course of your studies, as you will have dealt with factors relevant to the success of your studies, such as social integration, the German teaching and learning culture and the self-confidence to participate in German, at an early stage.
  • What do I need to register?

You have German language skills at C1 level or better and MarSkills is selectable in your field of study (exceptions possible, if places remain free, see below)

  • How and when do I register?

    • The module is offered every winter semester. The first seminar of the module starts in the winter semester 2024/25 and is called "Lehr- und Lernkultur: Kompetenzen für ein erfolgreiches Studium in Deutschland". It is an online seminar. The seminar will take place weekly from 16.10.2024 to 12.02.2025 (Wednesdays) from 16:15-17:45.

    • The instruction language is German, but for learners, so you don't need to be afraid of making mistakes.

    • To register: log in with Marvin: In the course catalog you will find the "MarSkills Center" below the offers from the departments, then click on "MarSkills" and then on "Zentrale Angebote des Studienbereichs Marburg Skills". There you will find "International Student Orientation" and can register for the module and its seminar. Registration is probably possible in September

    • You cannot register via Marvin because MarSkills is not integrated in your degree program? If places remain free, other students can also register for the seminar. Please register via this Ilias link (to follow in September). We will then let you know if you are offered a place. Important: you will then have to individually clarify whether you can get ECTS with your examination office!
  • Further information about the module

You can find detailed information on the "International Student Orientation" module in the MarSkills module handbook (in German).

Here you will find all MarSkills courses of the respective semester with a short description (in German).
