Psycholinguistic study on orthographic influences on spoken word recognition: Evidence from Chinese L2-learners of German with different language proficiency
Orthography affects second language speech processing, but differences among L2 learners with different levels of language proficiency can be assumed. My thesis addresses how language proficiency in the L2 affects the orthographic facilitation compared to performance in the L1. Moreover, Chinese as a logographic writing system contains many linguistic features that are distinct from German, e.g. that visually similar characters can have totally different pronunciations and meaning, and conversely similar pronunciations can have completely different characters and meaning. Thus, in my study I would additionally like to investigate if there are connections between the word recognition strategies of two different writing systems.
