3. Funding period (2022-2025)

In current geopolitics, access to international payment infrastructures plays a central role. Exclusion from them can severely affect national economies. Many of these infrastructures - for example, the SWIFT network - are based in the United States, which increases their sanctioning power. As a result, numerous alternative payment infrastructure projects have emerged around the world in recent years - particularly in the EU, Russia, and China. These projects are based on close, often tense collaborations between political institutions, central banks as traditional players in international financial infrastructures, and commercial fintech companies developing technical solutions. The subproject examines these collaborations under the question of how new understandings of political security and geopolitical power in economic terms are formed in them.
