Economics of the Middle East” (EMEA) is a unique master’s program combining institutional economics and business administration with applications to the economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Understanding complex economic challenges in the MENA requires an interdisciplinary approach. Thus, the EMEA curriculum equips students with knowledge about up-to-date issues relevant for many MENA countries, e.g., Islamic finance, political economy, natural resources, corruption, and conflict, as well as a wide range of electives from various disciplines to facilitate a broad understanding of the region’s complexity.

Hands-on regional experience is an asset: therefore we recommend spending one semester abroad at one of our many partner universities in the MENA region.
Objectives
The program systematically prepares its participants for professional practice as economic and business experts with a focus on the countries of the MENA region, meeting the demand for well-educated economic and business professionals with region-specific knowledge in a unique way.
The program particularly qualifies students for work relating to the countries of the MENA region. Possible professional fields for successful graduates are found in global corporations with a business focus in the MENA region, in the economic research departments of banks, insurance companies and industrial operations, international organizations and research institutes, public administration, ministries, associations and regulatory authorities. Furthermore, the master prepares successful graduates for a scholarly career, particularly for a doctorate with a focus on the region.
Admission requirements
Required university degree Certification of a degree from a bachelor's program or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university degree.
As part of the degree program, students must have acquired basic knowledge of economics, i.e. at least 60 credit points (CP) must have been earned in economics subjects. Of these, at least 18 CP must have been earned in economics subjects. In addition, at least 12 CP must have been earned in methods.
The Examination Board may make admission subject to the condition that additional coursework and/or examinations of a maximum of 12 CP are completed. In this case, the course may be extended accordingly.
