Subproject A01
Securitization and Holding Hostages from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period
1. Funding period (2014-2017)
The project was dedicated to the phenomenon of unilateral and reciprocal hostage-taking - in distinction to hostage-taking or war captivity - as a contractual guarantee in the context of foreign relations from Roman antiquity through the early and high Middle Ages to the early modern period. On the basis of a case database to be compiled, historical-political contexts will be analyzed across epochs and comparatively, in which this instrument reveals dialectics of the production and representation of security by way of symbolic communication or successive norming.
