For better or worse. A history of diverging safety perceptions of pesticides in Germany ca. 1880 to 1990
The human perception of insects and plants as beneficial or pests is characterized by a strong ambivalence and depends on multiple perspectives. The project analyzes this ambivalence as a security conflict that essentially evolves around a dilemma. On the one hand, food security, protection against insect-borne infectious diseases and economic considerations are given priority. On the other hand, there are fears for the safety of physical integrity, i.e. the protection of health from poisoning by chemical substances. The focus is on industry players, government agencies and environmental organizations. The aim is to understand the cycles of social evaluation of pesticides and the parameters behind them. Such a history is characterized by the mobility of fears, knowledge and living beings. The focus is therefore on a German history, but one that is situated in a European, transatlantic and global setting.
