Students studying the major subject “Latin Studies” will review key texts and authors of ancient Latin literature and can put these into the context of literary history and (cultural) history. You will be able to identify and highlight the significance of this literature for the development of European intellectual history. As a student, you will the learn to use a variety of philological methods to analyse Latin texts of a medium to advanced level and to interpret and translate them with the help of the relevant tools, taking the historic conditions of their creation into consideration.
The research focuses of Classical Philology at Marburg will enable you to intensively study a) the canonical texts of Roman antiquity, on which European cultural traditions in the sciences, literature, the arts and philosophy are based, and their historical contextualisation; b) the central guiding principles and phases of the reception of the ancient world in the Middle Ages, the modern era and the present day.

An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which you will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.

Prospects

As a graduate of the “Latin Studies” course, your language skills and cultural expertise will make you suitable for work in archives, libraries, museums and similar cultural institutions, as well as in areas of research management, culture management, university administration, public service and government ministries, e.g. in the Foreign Office and in comparable administrative fields. The course also lays solid foundations for professional careers in publishing, journalism, the media, politics and similar social fields. Furthermore, important key skills are taught that are highly relevant for academic work in general, but especially in the humanities, as well as for various non-university fields of work. For example, your communication, transcription and social interaction skills, as well as your independence, will be developed.

The choice of your major subject will decisively shape your professional qualifications profile. In conjunction with one or two minor subjects, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
