Program length: 6 semesters / 3 years (180 ECTS points)

The Deutsche Sprache und Literatur (Germanistik) / German Language and Literature bachelor's program provides a basic scholarly and professionally-oriented education in the field of German language and literature.

The program is furthermore the foundation for continuing master's programs in the field of linguistics and literature studies (e.g. M.A. in German Literature, M.A. in Linguistics: Cognition and Communication). The central qualification objectives are:

  • Fundamental knowledge of German literature and its history;
  • Fundamental knowledge of the German language: its structure, typical forms of use and communication and its history;
  • Key qualifications in handling texts and in the area of presentation and communication techniques.

Major topics

During the first two years of study, three basic modules and three consecutive advanced modules will provide you with fundamental insight into all three core fields of German studies:

  • "Older German Literature"
  • "Modern German Literature"
  • "German Linguistics / Philology."

Toward the end of the program, you will specialize in two of these three core areas.

Objectives

A German studies program qualifies you to work in the field of culture and public relations, in dependence on your major topic focus during the program. In every case, it is of great importance to deepen and strengthen the major topic you choose outside of the university, through relevant internships.

  • Publishing (editing, sales, marketing)
  • Bookselling
  • Journalism, particularly literary and cultural journalism
  • Freelance writing
  • Internal and external communications / corporate public relations
  • Publicity work / public relations at institutions
  • Speech writing
  • Marketing
  • Advertising
  • Cultural management: cultural centers, literary centers
  • Intercultural communication
  • Theater: Dramaturgy, direction assistance
  • Script development
  • Teaching, e.g. German as a foreign language
  • In the field of language education and speech training
  • In the field of (adult) education (adult education centers, German as a foreign language)
  • In the field of academics (with a Master), universities
  • In interface fields of teaching/research and administration in universities, ministries, institutions such as DAAD, for example
  • Editorial work at television stations, in radio or printed media
  • Text work for technical editorial staff
  • Libraries, archives

  • Admission requirements

    Education certificates General higher education entrance qualification, subject-related higher education entrance qualification, technical college entrance qualification or master’s certificate and comparable certificates from advanced professional training or professional qualifications
    Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admission German Skills:

    Other language Skills:
    Two foreign languages, including English. One foreign language must be certified at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; the other foreign language at Level A2.

    If Latin or Greek skills apply instead of one of the modern foreign languages, these must be certified at the level of the Latinum or Graecum by university entrance qualification certificate or otherwise.

    If the required foreign language skills can only be certified at Level A2, instead of Level B1, or at Level A1, instead of Level A2, upon application for study, admission is possible with the condition that the required level is certified by re-registration for the third semester. The same applies for certification of Latin skills.
