The Department
The Department of German Studies and Arts (Faculty 09) is one of the largest departments of Philipps-Universität Marburg. It brings together disciplines from the humanities and cultural studies that deal with German language and literature, with the history of art and music, with audio-visual media and artistic practice in fine arts.
The integration of Linguistics, Literature, Art History, Fine Arts, Musicology and Media Studies together gives our department its unique character and substance at the same time. Historic differences between academic disciplines go hand in hand with interdisciplinary work in the light of new settings, questions and methods. This also finds expression in a broad range of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.
Research at the department’s institutions has a long tradition, in some cases going back far into the 19th century. The faculty covers a broad range of topics and is internationally well known.
