Eligibility assessment process - Functional Materials (M.Sc.)
Documents to be submitted
The following documents and certifications are required for participation in the eligibility assessment process:
- Application for admission (online application of the online application portal)
- Certification of a degree from a subject-relevant bachelor's program in science or engineering, or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university diploma.
- Certification of skills in the English language at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe
- Tabular resume
- A letter of interest in English, with a length of approximately one DIN-A4 page (approx. 300 – 500 words)
- Certifications for the aforementioned suitability reasons.
- Confirmation of completion of the self-test provided on the website.
To successfully complete the course, passing the test is highly recommended. If you do not pass the self-test, you can still apply. Continue to the self-test
Criteria for personal disciplinary suitability
Personal disciplinary suitability is evaluated based on the submitted documents, according to the following criteria. A total of up to 6 suitability points can be achieved.
2.1. Up to 3 suitability points are assigned for the final grade point average or, if the final grade point average should not be available, a submitted, calculated average grade on the basis of at least 70% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree, according to the following key:
- 15.0 – 12.2 grade points (corresponds to grade of 0.7 – 1.6) => 3 points
- 12.1 – 10.3 grade points (corresponds to grade of 1.7 – 2.2) => 2 points
- 10.2 – 9.7 grade points (corresponds to grade of 2.3 – 2.4) => 1 point
(grade scale according to §28 of the general terms of the Philipp University of Marburg)
2.2. Up to 2 suitability points are assigned for the letter of interest and the resume:
In the letter of interest and accompanying resume, the applicant should present his/her disciplinary and personal suitability and explain his/her interest in commencing a Master of Science study program in "Functional Materials" in the Department of Physics of the Philipp University of Marburg.
2.3 Applicants with a degree in physics, chemistry, Materials science or electrical engineering receive 1 suitability point.
An evaluation of the degree of suitability with a total of at least 4 points is prerequisite for admission to the program.
Applicants who receive 3 suitability points are invited in a timely fashion by the eligibility assessment commission to a selection interview with the selection commission.
Selection interview
The selection interview takes approx. 15 minutes and can be carried out either in person or as a video conference, insofar as the identity of the applicant is ensured.
It focuses on the interest and suitability of the applicant, which are evaluated based on the following parameters:
- Presentation of interest by the applicant
- Examination of existing discipline-specific knowledge
- Brief presentation of the bachelor's thesis by the applicant in the English language
(clarity and rigor of the presentation, classification in the state of current knowledge, open questions, possible further development of the topic)
A determination of the overall impression that results from the comprehensive view of the aforementioned parameters is pivotal in evaluating the selection interview.
The selection interview is evaluated with 0 to 15 points. Applicants who achieve more than 12 points are considered suitable.
