Eligibility assessment process - History of International Relations (Master of Arts)
1. Documents to be submitted
The following documents and evidence are required for participation in the eligibility assessment process:
a) Application for admission (online application submitted via the online admission portal).
b) The first, undergraduate university degree with final grade.
c) Evidence of knowledge in the subject of history amounting to at least 24 CP.
d) Evidence of English language proficiency at Level B2 according to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
e) Evidence of proficiency in French or Italian or Spanish at Level B1 according to the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" or functional knowledge of Latin.
f) a letter of no more than two A4 pages in which the applicant outlines his/her
- expectations of the Master's programme "History of International Politics" at the Philipps-Universität Marburg as well as
- subject-related eligibility, which refers to personal commitment, social competence and the ability to work in a team (especially in joint work in courses), self-reflective work, practical experience in professional fields that are of interest to history graduates, foreign language competence and subject-related time spent abroad or academic engagement with topics related to history (e.g. in the Bachelor's thesis).
g) Curriculum vitae in tabular form on one DIN A4 page.
h) if applicable, evidence of the reasons for eligibility listed under f) and g), such as practical experience, time spent abroad, further foreign language skills.
2. Eligibility assessment process
The personal subject-related eligibility is assessed on the basis of the submitted documents using the following criteria A total of up to 100 eligibility points can be achieved.
2.1. Points are awarded for the overall grade of the first degree in the following manner:
- Grade points 13.9 to 15.0 (= decimal mark 1.0 to 0.7) = 60 points
- Grade points 12.7 to 13.8 (= decimal mark 1.4 to 1.1) = 58 points
- Grade points 11.9 to 12.6 (= decimal mark 1.7 to 1.5) = 56 points
- Grade points 10.9 to 11.8 (= decimal mark 2.0 to 1.8) = 54 points
- Grade points 10.0 to 10.8 (= decimal mark 2.3 to 2.1) = 52 points
- Grade points 8.9 to 9.9 (= decimal mark 2.7 to 2.4) = 46 points
- Grade points 7.9 to 8.8 (= decimal mark 3.0 to 2.8) = 40 points
The information is based on the grading scale according to § 28 General Regulations of the Philipps-Universität Marburg.
2.2. Proven practical experience (of at least one month each) at public and private institutions in the field of science or science-related fields (e.g. museums, archives, foundations, press, publishing houses, tourist offices, political institutions, educational institutions, etc.). The activities carried out there must be related to historical studies (= 5 points per activity lasting between one month and five months, 10 points per internship lasting at least 6 months; max. 10 points).
2.3. Proven subject-related experience abroad (of at least two months each; 5 points per country and stay of two to five months, 10 points for a stay of at least 6 months in one country; max. 10 points).
2.4. Certified knowledge of other modern foreign languages not included under points 1 d) and e) or knowledge of ancient languages at least at the B1 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" (5 points per language; max. 10 points).
2.5. Evaluation of the letter as well as the curriculum vitae together with the accompanying evidence for professional and personal eligibility (max. 10 points).
A prerequisite for admission to the degree programme is an assessment totalling at least 52 eligibility points.
