Data Backup (Backup Service)

The University Computer Center uses a variety of methods to protect your data, such as local backups (snapshots, sometimes several times a day), nightly backups on magnetic tapes and the retention of data on storage devices at several locations (Snapmirror, Ceph). All procedures serve different application scenarios, but exclusively for the protection of your data. Depending on the procedure, access to the backed up data for the purpose of recovery differs. Data that you or your workgroup stores on network drives (e.g. drive H:) or the Hessenbox is centrally stored and secured by the University Computer Center. You can access this data independently. You will find a description on the page about the file service or the Hessenbox. You should therefore preferably save your data on network drives or the Hessenbox!

Locally stored data (usually drive D: or E:) or data on file servers in the departments and institutions are not backed up by default. To protect this data, the University Computer Center offers an overnight tape backup (backup service). With this procedure, the data is backed up regularly (once per day starting at 8 pm) on workdays (Monday - Friday). Only the data that has been added or changed since the last backup is backed up (incremental backup). Deleted files and changed versions of a file will be kept on the backup server for 6 months. You must apply for a computer to participate in the backup service, see Forms. Additional software must be installed on the computer for this function, see Instructions.
