15.05.2024 Gender Equality in the Bottleneck: What to Expect from the Changes to the Moroccan Family Code?

Rana Magdy (PhD Candidate) has published a new article with the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung (FNF)

Moroccan civil society is highly engaged and successful in areas such as education, human rights, and environmental policies, but progress in women's rights remains slow due to societal barriers. King Mohamed VI has responded to growing calls for reform by ordering a review of the family code, with a deadline for proposals in six months. The family code, Moudwanat Al Osra, which follows Islamic Sharia law, was revised in 2004 to better protect women's and children's rights, but questions remain about its capability to foster genuine equality.

Rana Magdy discusses the extent to which the current Moudawana in Morocco supports women's rights and promotes sustainable change towards gender equality.
