In a nutshell, this study by Professors Mohammad Reza Farzanegan & Hassan F. Gholipour found that:

  • Higher COVID-19 mortality rates increase the risk of internal conflict.
  • Government economic measures may weaken this positive association.
  • COVID-19 fatalities primarily affect the risk of civil disorder.
  • The results are based on a sample of 114 countries over 2020-2021.
  • Future studies can explore the long-term effects of COVID-19 on conflicts.
