19.04.2023 New Publication: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and votes in favor of Russia in the UN General Assembly
A new study published in the International Interactions by Professors Farzanegan and Gholipour explores why some countries chose not to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine during the UN General Assembly's recent emergency session.
The research investigates economic, military, political, geographic, and historical factors that may have influenced these countries' voting behavior in favor of Russia. Using Probit regressions, the authors find that the probability of voting in favor of Russia is significantly higher in countries with defense cooperation agreements, leftist governments, political similarities, and no history of war with the Soviet Union. Countries that are major recipients of Russian aid also tend to vote in favor of Russia.
