Abstract
"In this essay I will be using the term ‘mobile life-careers’ in reference to work lives that have incorporated mobilities as ongoing constitutive features. The term is intended to highlight the entanglements arising through the dynamic interaction between mobilities, the life course and work. At issue is not simply whether a particular livelihood entails more or less mobility but the ways in which the forms and pacing of mobilities may change over time, both as an intrinsic part of work routines as well as in other domains influencing, affected by or associated with these occupational practices. In considering these types of conjunctures, I will be drawing on two studies of mobile workers separated by nearly two decades. The first is a study, conducted during the early 2000s, among internationally mobile professionals, who advised or managed projects involving various aspects of infrastructure development. The second ongoing study is a follow up to this earlier research. It has included interviews and contacts with some of the professionals who participated in this earlier project as well as further snowballing to a wider range of mobile workers."
