Sprache und Mythen der Yukpa im Kontext

Zur linguistischen und ethnologischen Verortung eines Außenseiters in der Carib-Sprachfamilie und im nördlichen Andentiefland

Die Yukpa sind eine Carib-sprechende amerindianische Gruppe, die im kolumbianisch-venezolanischen Grenzgebiet auf beiden Seiten der Serranía del Perijá siedeln. Die mindestens 15.000 Yukpa leben heute sowohl in größeren Städten als auch mehrheitlich in abgelegenen Siedlungen in den Bergen. Die einzelnen Subgruppen zeigen zum Teil beträchtliche Unterschiede nicht nur auf linguistischer, sondern auch auf soziokultureller und soziokosmologischer Ebene. Die Yukpa sind heute die nordwestlichste Gruppe unter den Carib-Sprecher*innen. Ihr Siedlungsgebiet liegt in relativ großer geographischer Distanz zu anderen Carib-Gruppen. Die unmittelbaren Nachbargruppen der Yukpa sind Chibcha- und Arawak- Sprecher*innen. Durch diese geographische Situation nehmen die Yukpa im Kontext der Carib-Sprachen als auch in der regionalen Umgebung die Position eines linguistischen sowie soziokulturellen Außenseiters ein.

Weder die außergewöhnliche Stellung der Yukpa in Bezug auf andere Carib-Sprecher*innen und angrenzende Ararwak- und Chibcha-Sprecher*innen, noch die Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Yukpa-Subgruppen wurden bisher systematisch untersucht. Das Projekt möchte diese Lücke anhand einer vergleichenden Analyse von Schöpfungsmythen und ihren lebensweltlichen und soziokosmologischen Implikationen schließen. Ausgehend von einem reichhaltigen Korpus von Yukpa-Schöpfungsmythen, die in einem ersten Schritt systematisch aufgearbeitet werden (Transkription, linguistisch analytische Morphemglossierung, Übersetzung, ethnografische Annotation), werden die sozial und ethnologisch kontextualisierten Mythen zunächst auf Ebene der verschiedenen Yukpa-Subgruppen und dann im Kontext der Sprachfamilie (Carib) sowie im Kontext des geographischen Umfeldes (Chibcha und Arawak- Sprecher) in Bezug auf lebensweltliche, linguistische und ontologische Dimensionen der Mythen analysiert. 

Das Projekt wird zur ethnolinguistischen Dokumentation und Analyse der Schöpfungsmythen der Yukpa, einem Verständnis ihrer Rolle in der lebensweltlichen soziokosmologischen Praxis der Yukpa und in weiterer Folge zu einer systematischen vergleichenden Analyse indigener Kosmologien im Norden Südamerikas beitragen.

Contextualizando la lengua y los mitos de lxs Yukpa

La posición lingüística y etnológica de un forastero en la familia de la lenguas caribes y las tierras bajas del norte de los Andes

Lxs Yukpa son hablantes de una lengua caribe que viven en la Serranía del Perijá a ambos lados de l a frontera entre Colombia y Venezuela. Hoy en día los por lo menos 15.000 Yukpa viven tanto en las ciudades grandes así como una mayoría en asentamientos remotos en las montañas. Los diferentes subgrupos muestran por partes diferencias considerables, no solamente en el nivel lingüístico, sino también en el nivel socio-cultural y socio-cosmológico. En la actualidad lxs Yukpa son el grupo más noroccidental de lxs hablantes de una lengua caribe. Su zona de asentamiento se encuentra en gran distancia geográfica a otros grupos caribes. Sus vecinxs inmediatxs son
hablantes de lenguas chibchas y arawak. Debido a esta situación geográfica, lxs Yukpa toman una posición foránea lingüísticamente y socio-culturalmente tanto en su familia de lengua así como en su etorno regional.

Hasta el momento no existen estudios sistemáticos que traten de la posición excepcional de lxs Yukpa en relación a otrxs hablantes de la lengua caribe y a sus vecinxs arawak y chibchan, ni de las diferencias entre los diferentes subgrupos yukpa. El objetivo del proyecto es llenar este vació mediante un análisis comparativo de historias de
creación y sus implicaciones en la vida diaría y en el ámbito socio-cosmológico. Sobre la base de un rico corpus de historias de creación yukpa que se procesarán de forma sistemática en un primer paso (transcripción, glosa morfológica, traducción, anotación etnográfica), los mitos que han contextualizado social y antropologico serán analizados comparativamente a nivel de los distintos subgrupos yukpa. A continuación serán analizado en el contexto de la familia lingüística (Caribe), así como en el contexto del entorno geográfico (hablantes de lenguas chibchas y arawak). Al hacerlo, se toman en cuenta las dimensiones socio-culturales, lingüísticas y ontológicas de
los mitos.

El proyecto contribuye a la documentación etnolingüística y el análisis de historias de creación yukpa, a una comprensión de su papel en la práctica de la vida cotidiana y socio-cosmológica de lxs Yukpa y, además, a un análisis comparativo sistemático de las cosmologías indígenas en el norte de América del Sur.

Contextualizing Yukpa language and myths

The linguistic and ethnological position of an outsider in the Cariban language family and the northern Andean lowlands

The Yukpa are a Cariban-speaking people who live at the Colombian-Venezuelan border area on both sides of the Serranía del Perijá. Nowadays, the at least 15.000 Yukpa live both, in larger cities and in remote settlements in the mountains. The individual subgroups show considerable differences not only on linguistic but also on socio-cultural and socio-cosmological levels.

The Yukpa are the northwesternmost group among the Cariban-speakers. Their settlement area is located in great geographical distance from other Cariban-speaking groups. The immediate neighboring groups of the Yukpa are Chibchan- and Arawakan-speakers. Due to this geographical situation, the Yukpa are outsiders, linguistically and socio-culturally, in the context of the Cariban languages as well as in the regional environment.

So far there are no systematic studies that deal with the exceptional position of the Yukpa in relation to other Cariban speakers and neighboring Ararwakan- and Chibchan-speakers, nor the differences between the individual Yukpa subgroups. The project aims to close this gap by means of a comparative analysis of creation myths and their life-worldly and socio-cosmological implications.

Based on a rich corpus of Yukpa creation myths that will be systematically processed in a first step (transcription, interlinear morphological glosses, translation, ethnographic annotation), the social and ethnological contextualized myths will be analyzed comparatively at the level of the various Yukpa subgroups. Next they will be analyzed in the context of the language family (Carib) as well as in the context of the geographic environment (Chibchan- and Arawakan-speaker). In doing so, the life-world, linguistic and ontological dimensions of the myths are taken into account.

The project contributes to the ethno-linguistic documentation and analysis of the creation myths of the Yukpa, an understanding of their role in the life-worldly and socio-cosmological practice of the Yukpa and further, to a systematic comparative analysis of indigenous cosmologies in the north of South America.
