„Unethical Behaviour in Academia: Forms, Causes, and Countermeasures”

In recent years, the number of media reports about sometimes drastic cases of unethical behaviour within the academic community has been steadily increasing. In response, calls for reform are getting louder. In my talk, I will first examine the diverse forms of unethical behaviour in academia (bullying, exploitation, sexual harassment, corruption, pseudo-research, waste, data manipulation, etc.). Despite this diversity, some rather general parameters of the current academic system can be identified that seem to permit or even encourage unethical behaviour. Based on this analysis, I will describe a series of possible changes to structures and habits that may help curtail the problem.
