Im Rahmen der digitalen Vortragsreihe "Marburg Celtic Seminar: History of Celtic Studies" findet am 23. Mai um 18 Uhr der Vortrag von Dr Ian Stewart (Queen Mary University of London) statt.

Celtic Scholarship in Britain from Lhuyd to Prichard

This is a paper re-interpreting the development of ‘Celtic Studies’ in eighteenth-century Britain. Eschewing disciplinary teleology, I consider key figures and their ideas within expanded intellectual and cultural contexts, and present new understandings of Paul-Yves Pezron, James Macpherson, Thomas Percy, John Pinkerton, and James Cowles Prichard. Once considered a dead zone in Celtic Studies, the eighteenth century should be understood as the crucial link between the humanist historical and philological study of the ancient Celts and the formalisation of the discipline in the nineteenth century.
