From Ossian to Kaiser Wilhelm: The origins of Celtic Studies in 19th-century Germany

If the history of Celtic Studies in Germany is sometimes taken to have been closely bound up with imperialist ambitions and nationalist ideologies, a close look at its early development shows that its origins were far more complex and diverse than a reduction to such political or ideological aspects would suggest. Based on both published and unpublished sources, the lecture will look at the lives and works of the early Celticists in the cultural context of their times, taking account of historical developments and significant changes from the second half of the 18th century to the First World War.
