Hearing Welsh spoken in the border towns of Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Chester was often a defining moment for C18th and early C19th tourists beginning their tours of Wales. How did they respond?
This talk explores some of the ways in which the idea, as well as the actuality, of the Welsh language came to signify for those travelling in the country. Drawing on published and unpublished tours, and on the work of Welsh-speaking writers as well as those without the language, it explores the penumbra of meanings associated with 'ancient' and 'Celtic' languages and considers the various channels and sources for ‘outsiders’’ knowledge of Welsh.
Die Vorträge finden digital immer um 18 Uhr s.t. statt.
