Your study plan in MSc Molecular Biotechnology

The 4-semester Master's program is divided into two sections and begins with our information and consultation services even before the start of the semester.

  • Before you start...

In an information session, we will provide you with a comprehensive overview of your study program. You will receive specific details regarding the modules you will undertake in the first semester. Based on this information, you will have the opportunity to make your module selection during the week preceding the start of the semester. This step is important, as your studies will commence on the very first day of the lecture period. We assure you that our advisory services will be available to you not only prior to commencing your studies but also throughout your academic journey.

As you will embark on your studies in the winter semester, your information session will be integrated into the "Orientation Week" (OE week), an event organized and coordinated by the Biology Student Council. This event encompasses a diverse and comprehensive program, and we extend a cordial invitation for your active participation.

  • The first two semesters...

During the first semester, you will participate as a group in an advanced module that teaches the fundamental principles of molecular biotechnology. This module will cover the structure, biochemistry, and biology of important biologically relevant molecules, as well as basic concepts of biotechnological research from both academic and industrial perspectives.

In addition, you will be required to take three methods and technology modules, each with a specific focus on: (i) bio and chemical analytics, (ii) cell engineering and analytics, and (iii) computational biology. Within each of these modules, you will have the opportunity to choose two workshops based on your personal interests from a comprehensive portfolio of modern techniques and methods in molecular biology. During these workshops you will work as part of a small group in our state-of-the-art research laboratories, where you'll receive hands-on training using cutting-edge equipment.

The second semester experts from the local biotechnology industry, will offer lectures advancing your knowledge in the biotechnological production process, including the identification of target molecules, conducting preclinical and clinical trials, and how to obtain regulatory approval. Quality control measures, to ensure the safety and efficacy of the final product, will be emphasized throughout the entire course. In addition, you'll also take courses in bioprocess engineering. Finally, in lectures and practice designed in collaboration with the Marburg Institute for Innovation Research and Start-up Support (MAFEX), you'll gain an overview of the business and legal fundamentals necessary to develop a marketable biotech product from your own ideas.

  • The third and fourth semester...

With the expert knowledge acquired in the first two semesters, you'll be well equipped to gain valuable research and professional experience through multi-week internships organized with the support of your instructors at the university. Depending on your personal interests and available options, these internships can be carried out at the Philipps-University Marburg, but also other universities, extramural research institutions, or industry both domestically and abroad. Alternatively, you may choose to participate in a biotechnological idea competition such as iGEM. The culmination of the program is an experimental master's thesis, which you'll conduct in a molecular biology topic.
