Introduction to Research Data Managment

Research is becoming increasingly computational, data-driven, and collaborative. The increasing size of digital research data that is generated or collected in almost every research project requires us to be responsible, proactive data managers. We are faced with the challenge of not only managing and documenting these data but also of preserving them and making them available for reuse.

While data management can sound like a lot of work for little payoff, managing our research data well actually yields considerable personal and practical benefits. Well-managed and well-described data is easier to sort through, access, and understand, thereby making our research project more efficient. Good data management safeguards against data loss and – increasingly important – publication retractions, possibly sparing you a frustrating experience.

Building upon the principles outlined in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, our workshop will furthermore explore how effective data management serves as a foundational element for Open Data, playing a crucial role in fostering scientific collaborations and facilitating the sharing of information to benefit both the scientific community and society at large.

Intended training results:

- You will understand the fundamentals of research data management.
- You will be able to formulate data management plans that detail the organization, documentation, and storage of data and be aware of strategies to comply with a data management plan.
- You will gain insight into funder requirements as well as Philipps University's policy on data management and sharing.
- You will be familiar with the fundamentals of publishing research data.
- You will be aware of freely available resources and tools to support data management.
- You will have a clear understanding of research data management services and consulting facilities at Philipps University Marburg.

To participate in the online course, you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome) as well as a headset (or speakers and a microphone), a webcam, and a stable Internet connection. Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.

The course will be held as an online event using BigBlueButton. The lecturers will provide the access link (BigBlueButton) until 01.10.2024.
