Prof. Dr. Ayşe Durakbaşa: Turkish Secularism and Prospects for Women’s Movement in Turkey

In this lecture, after providing a comparative historical background information and commentary about the Turkish Republic among other states of the MENA region, I want to specifically focus on the changes towards Islamization of the regime under AKP rule. The instrumentalization of the institution of Diyanet (The Directorate of Religious Affairs) for this purpose and the reactions and responses of the women’s groups of different world-views towards these attempts will be described and discussed. I will aim to delineate a common ground of maintaining the secular characteristics of the polity that might accord with the demands of different sectors of the women’s public in Turkey.
