Abstract
Metamaterials (MTMs) are engineered composites of conducting resonant structures with sub-wavelength dimensions. Each fo these resonating elements forms a metaatom and one or multiple metaatoms form a unit cell, which defines the smallest element in a periodic array. These metaatoms can be designed to yield a required response at frequencies from the microwave through the visible.
The wide range of possible applications of today's terahertz (THz) technology is stimulating enormous attention from specialists in various fields such as security, quality control, sensing and telecommunications. It remained almot unexplored until recently due to the lack of efficient generation and detection techniques. Hence, the development of this technology depends on realizing efficient components with different functionalities.
In this talk, I will discuss common MTM designs and the various resonances that can be excited. To better understand the working principle of MTMs, near- and far-field coupling mechanisms on MTM resonators will be discussed. More importantly, some of the recently proposed functional THz metamaterials will be presented highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in comparison to existing approaches and providing a perspective on applications for THz MTM structures. Furthermore, a proof of concept for a new generation of ultrafast nonlinear terahertz metamaterials will be demonstrated.
