Wir freuen uns sehr, Ihnen in diesem Jahr den Festvortrag von Prof. Mark A. Drumbl zum Thema "Women and Atrocity: Beyond Simplistic Caricatures" präsentieren zu können.

13. Marburger Vorlesung zum Völkerstrafrecht:

Women and Atrocity: Beyond Simplistic Caricatures - Prof. Mark A. Drumbl

Abstract:
International criminal law tends to reduce gender to a simplistic binary in cases of atrocity crime, including sexual violence and forced marriage. Women present as victims; men as perpetrators. Yet, the reality of mass violence is more complex. Women may also be perpetrators of horrific crimes. This presentation discusses some of these women and their problematic encounters with the law. It reveals how chauvinistic and feminist tropes, while oppositional, each conspire to unhelpfully distort women who perpetrate acts of atrocity. This presentation also gazes beyond. It notes that simplistic caricatures spill over and inform how the law constructs male victims of sexual violence and forced marriage, often obscuring their pain while assuming their power, and also embeds a heteronormative and reductively binary vision of sex- and gender-based violence. In the end, this presentation calls for an inclusive approach to better capture the dynamics of mass violence, the full range of harms, and to solidify transitional justice as promoting equality and dignity.
