19.04.2021 AnthroLab Online Lecture Series

The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology is very excited to launch the Summer Term 2021 AnthroLab Online Lecture Series titled "Security from the Margins – Revisiting the Critical Anthropology of Security" and would like to welcome you to attend this interesting program.

The lecture series in summer 2021 will engage with the Anthropology of Security. Departing from Daniel Goldstein’s demand for a Critical Anthropology of Security we will focus on ways of perceiving (in)security and making security by actors at the margins of the state.
We will reflect on the various ways and future demands to put such a focus into practice and discuss the empirical and theoretical insights that emerge from such a focus on security. By security from the margins we refer to the concepts, practices and strategies of (in)security of non-hegemonic actors beyond the conventional security apparatuses, industries and assemblages, such as - to mention just a few - indigenous, afro, peasant, LGBT+, urban poor, migrants and other actors at the margins of the state. Thereby we would like to review existing research, present current research projects and reflect on future venues for a Critical Anthropology of Security.

The first lecture will take place on April 29th, 2021, 6.15 p.m.:
(In)security and Vigilance in the US-Mexican Borderlands: Watchful Citizens and Political Subject Formation.
