Julia Penachioni is a Brazilian researcher from Sao Paulo. She is a PhD candidate at the Department of Political Science at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil, with a scholarship from the Brazilian government (CNPq). Currently, she holds a research grant from CAPES international program to be a guest researcher at the Center for Conflict Studies of the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

In her professional career, she worked as an assistant researcher for the Martius Chair for German and European Studies at USP and as Professor assistant in the Teaching Improvement Program, also at USP. She has also experience working in international chambers of commerce, such as the German and the Indian one in Brazil.

Julia holds a bachelor's degree in International Relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo and a master's degree in Social Sciences from the same university. She is specialized in International Law (Organizations and Integration) and International Negotiations. As an international relations student, she also took part in an academic exchange program at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Nuremberg during a semester, where she started to feel interested about international courts. Following this experience, Julia developed her master’s dissertation on the criminalization by the International Criminal Court of sexual violence during wartime.

Her doctoral thesis analyzes the impact of applying Transitional Justice (TJ) mechanisms after episodes of political instability and violence. Therefore, she investigates the TJ theoretical field and its expansion through different contexts. Empirically, the research deals with data collection and analysis, and case studies to observe the outcomes of that application in relation to three aspects: stability, protection of human rights and quality of democracy.

Julia enjoys travelling, to get to know other cultures and to build networks. In her leisure time, she likes to dance, to try new foods, and to read good books.
