  Dr. Werner Distler held the (permanent) position of Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent) of International Relations at the Department for International Relations and International Organisation at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) from September 2022 to January 2025. From 2014 until 2022, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Collaborative Research Center “Dynamics of Security” at the University of Marburg, following a position as a research fellow at the Center for Conflict Studies (2010 – 2014). Between 2020 and 2023, he was the Principal Investigator of three research projects funded by the German Research Foundation, the German Foundation for Peace Research and the Gratama Foundation (The Netherlands).

   

  In his work, he focuses on international interventions, peacebuilding, and state-building, also from a historical perspective. He has a regional focus on Germany, Kosovo and Oceania (Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste) and a particular interest in the United Nations. Conceptually, his work focuses on social interaction, knowledge practices and objects, and security constructions.
