Cultures in general as well as academic cultures in particular are characterized by basic assumptions and practices. It is easy to overlook the fact that these implicit rules of academic systems are also influenced by cultural differences that not only enrich international exchange but sometimes also impede it. For example, problems can be related to different academic traditions (e.g., different ways of arguing, presenting or writing) or misunderstandings can arise at the social level (e.g., withregard to interaction and communication with supervisors and peers).
As an international doctoral candidate, your adaption capabilities are strengthened in this workshop by gaining profound insights into the German academic system.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- You understand academic differences (peer exchange).
- You gain an appreciation for cultural standards in Germany and German academic standards (instructor input, discussion, instructor feedback).
- You understand intercultural stumbling blocks in science (group work, critical incidents).
- You feel confident in interacting with supervisors and peers (short presentation, discussion, instructor feedback).
