Methodological rigor is of vital importance for the success of a qualitative research project. Research questions, methodological approaches to data collection, and strategies of (verbal) data analysis have to be well matched to ensure a compelling research design. The workshop aims at providing the opportunity to discuss these issues critically in light of the participants’ own dissertation projects. It addresses Ph.D. students who seek to further clarify their qualitative study design with regard to sampling procedure, data-gathering techniques, approaches to data analysis, and other topics. Thus, we will not deal with general methodological issues but focus instead on specific, methodologically demanding topics that the participants are faced with in their own qualitative study.
Intended Learning Outcomes
After the workshop you will be able to:
- provide valid arguments for the decisions you have made in designing your qualitative study (brief input and discussion),
- recognize possible limits of your own study and discuss their consequences (discussions among the participants), and
- decide which methodological approaches are appropriate for the analysis of your data (outline of the methodological rationale).
Requirements
Participants should be well advanced in defining their research question. They are kindly asked to submit a research abstract and the main questions they would like to discuss regarding their own qualitative study. Please send this information no later than one week before the beginning of the workshop to anna.brake@phil.uni-augsburg.de.
