"Publish or perish" – nowadays this caveat is more valid than ever in science. The motivations driving scientists to publish their work are diverse, ranging from the dissemination of research results to strengthening one’s own reputation as a scientist, and they are ever more important in pursuing a scientific career. The quality of a scientist’s research is commonly measured on the basis of the person’s publication output and the visibility of his or her research.
Moreover, quantitative publication standards have become more and more important in evaluating the quality of science. Thus, the role of bibliometric factors is gaining increasing significance in the measurement of scientific performance. At the same time, publication platforms are at least as diverse as the scientists who seek to use them. Therefore, it is important for early-career scientists to learn how to present their scientific results and to develop publication strategies.
This workshop is aimed at young scientists who are currently developing or have already developed their own research results and want to publish them in view of a strategic career plan.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will gain insights into different publication formats and platforms (trainer input).
  • You will come to know about quality measurements of a scientific publication (trainer input and group discussion).
  • You will be familiar with the structure of a scientific publication (trainer input and group discussion).
  • You will be aware of quality criteria for a "good" publication (the reviewers’ point of view) (trainer input, group exercises).
  • You will be informed about good scientific publication practice (trainer input, group and individual exercises).
  • You will develop an outline for an individual publication strategy based on short- and medium-term career plans (individual exercises).
