Writing Lab – From Idea to Text in the Life and Natural Sciences – Online Course

For many young scientists, writing about their research is often the hardest part of their work. However, to be successful and reach their target audience, academics need to be clear and to the point. The methods and instruments of scientific writing to do so can be learned. Applying a few select techniques for structuring and plausible argumentation makes it possible to convey even complex contents clearly and comprehensibly.
This workshop will highlight the first phase of academic writing: from idea to text. It will introduce the participants to creative techniques for deciding on the wording of the topic that they want to write about. They will engage in developing a strategy of how to convey their topic – from structure to argumentation. Different types and styles of texts will be discussed.

Intended Learning Outcomes

You will be able to

• decide on the wording of a research topic to write about and the appropriate format for your text,
• develop arguments as to why this topic is interesting to the target audience,
• structure your argumentation, and
• develop a master plan for your writing process.

Didactic Methods

Trainer input, group discussion, exercises
Since this workshop will be conducted in a digital format group exercises will be performed in virtual breakout rooms.

Requirements

To participate in the online course you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and microphone), possibly a webcam plus a stable Internet connection.

Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.
