Writing Effective Introductions for Term Papers and Theses in English

Writers often struggle under the pressure of the introduction, knowing how important it is to readers. Fortunately, introductions in academic genres share conventional “moves” that novice writers can learn and apply to their own writing.
In this workshop, participants will learn the common rhetorical moves of the introduction in academic genres like the research-based term paper and the thesis. We will analyze model writing from various disciplines to explore disciplinary variation from the norm, and participants will have the time and space to craft an introduction for a current writing project.
