Program: Moderne arabische Politik, Gesellschaft und Kultur / Modern Arabian Politics, Society and Culture
Degree: Master of Arts (MA)
Program length: 2 years / 4 semesters (120 ECTS points)
Have you completed a Bachelor's in the humanities and social sciences, in particular in Middle Eastern Studies or a related field, and want to engage academically with current Arabian politics, society and culture?
Then our interdisciplinary Master’s program is the right choice for you! It combines the discplines of Political Science, Cultural and Literary Studies with regional expertise on the Arabic world.
Major topics
In Marburg, you will learn to carry out research on the intersections between politics, society and culture in the Near and Middle East and North Africa, and will receive comprehensive training in the Arabic language. The program expands the spectrum of specific trans-regional perspectives and relevant methodology by integrating research on peace and conflict and on religious studies.
Objectives
The program combines two key elements for modern area studies: firstly, a theoretical - methodological approach, and secondly active linguistic and regional competence. In addition to political sciences approaches, literary and cultural science questions are also integrated into the curriculum.
The program is not directed towards any uniform occupational profile, but offers a diverse range of professional options. The program will qualify you for work in these professional fields, among others:
- International institutions and organizations
- Science (universities, research institutions)
- Intercultural institutions and migration agencies; political advising (public administration, associations, institutions and organizations)
- Media, publishing and public relations work
Adult education, cultural institutions and journalism.
The key organizational, communicative, intercultural, social and intellectual competencies taught in this program will also have practical professional value in other fields as well. The advanced language training enables translator or editor jobs and qualifies you for mediator services in the field of cultural/knowledge transfer, in the broadest sense. Particularly in the Near and Middle East, the linguistic and intercultural expertise of such successful graduates, who can act as cultural mediators in the Arabic world due to their well-founded knowledge of current discourse, is in demand in order to help overcome pervasive gaps in understanding and knowledge.
Of course, there is the possibility of completing a Ph.D. After successfully completing this program.
