NaDiMa Dialogue #2 | Earthquake: Engineering Meets Economics | 28 August 2020
Agenda
In the second NaDiMa Dialogue, we focus on earthquake risk management with reference to Iran on one side and long-term (economic) consequences of such disasters on the other side.
Two prominent experts from the fields of earthquake seismology (Assistant Professor Dr. Eshaghi from Iran Strong Motion Network) and economics (Professor Dr. Noy from Victoria University of Wellington & Editor in Chief of Economics of Disasters and Climate Change journal) will examine the topic of earthquake, illustrating different theoretical, empirical and policy aspects. This event provides a unique opportunity for an interdisciplinary discussion of facts and evidence on earthquake as well as a platform for raising questions and receiving feedbacks from experts.
NaDiMa Dialogue #2 presents a 'meeting point' for economists and engineers (among others) with interest in the latest development of earthquake risk management in Iran and economic/financial aspects of disasters.
Speakers
Introduction:
Mohammad Reza Farzanegan, Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies
Mohammad Farzanegan is Professor of Economics of the Middle East at Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) & School of Business and Economics at Philipps-Universität Marburg. He gained his PhD in Economics from TU Dresden (2009) and was the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow from 2010-2012. His fields of research are political economy and empirical development economics with reference to the Middle East/Iran.
Moderator:
Mohammad Shahvar, Iran Strong Motion Network
Mohammad Shahvar received his PhD in ‘earthquake engineering’ in 2013 from the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES), Iran on topic of "Developing of Earthquake ShakeMap system for Iran". Currently, he is Assistant Professor at BHRC, Iran Strong Motion Network. He is responsible for the Strong Motion Network operation, and deployment of rapid response system and early warning system for major cities of Iran at the Road, Housing and Urban Development research center, BHRC, Iran.
Attieh Eshaghi, Iran Strong Motion Network
Topic: Earthquake Hazard and Disaster Management in Iran
Attieh Eshaghi is the Assistant Professor at Iran Strong Motion Network- Road, Housing and Urban Development Research Center in Iran since 2016. She completed her PhD. in earthquake seismology from University of Western Ontario, Canada in 2014. Currently she is working on fields of Strong Motion Data Analysis, Seismic Hazard Analysis, estimation of site response and Earthquake Early Warning system.
Ilan Noy, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
Topic: The Long-Term Consequences of Earthquakes: What do we Know, and What we still Don't?
Ilan Noy is the holder of the Chair in the Economics of Disasters and Climate Change. He and his team are based within the Wellington School of Business and Government at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Ilan and his research group study disasters—including earthquakes, epidemics, droughts, and cyclones—and other phenomena related to climate change. The research focuses on domestic and international case studies and comparative analysis of economic aspects of these extreme events.
