"Nature, Wealth & Power" Summer School in Marburg, Germany

The Economics of the Middle East Research Group of Philipps-Universität Marburg in cooperation with Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, University of Tehran, and Tarbiat Modares University continued its successful series of seasonal schools with the 2018 Summer School on "Nature, Wealth & Power" which was held at the CNMS in Marburg, Germany.

  As part of our series of seasonal schools within the „Political Economy of Natural Resource Management” academic and cultural project, the first event in 2018 will cover the topic of “Nature, Wealth & Power”. In lectures, seminars and workshops, we will discuss the relationships of these keywords, for example the relationship between natural resource abundance and different forms of power. Nature provides economies with resources and wealth, but economic activities and extraction of resources might also harm environment. Abundance of natural resources can bring wealth to countries, but it can also bring a curse with it, increases corruption and conflict, affects the quality of institutions, or leads to management and distribution distortions (e.g., income inequality and poverty), among others. Another aspect is the role of political, economic and social power of resource-rich countries. Overall, there are different interesting, policy-relevant questions to ask, and issues to discuss. We are looking forward to meet you!

  We want to give students from Germany and Iran the opportunity to receive intercultural experiences and competences within an academic environment. This includes networking and discussing with experts from the two respective countries. Furthermore, we want to teach students in relevant methods and give them a broad picture about the research on the political economy of natural resource management. In addition, internationalization of teaching in both countries and sustainable cooperation in research projects are other goals of our initiative which started formally in 2016.
