Philipps University of Marburg was founded in 1527 and is one of the oldest German universities. It is named after its founder Philip I of Hesse. A total of eleven scientists who studied or taught in Marburg were awarded a Nobel Prize. The project "Political Economy of Natural Resource Management" (NAREM) is implemented by the Economics of the Middle East Research Group of Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) at Philipps University. This interdisciplinary Center was founded in 2006. Its Economics research group has the main research interests in economics of political transformation in the MENA region, informal economy and illicit trade, as well as political economy of demographic transition, natural resource management, conflict and violence, remittances, and sanctions.
Tarbiat Modares University (Professor Training University) is the only exclusively graduate university in Iran and was founded in 1982 to train university professors. The university’s primary mission is to train academic staff and researchers for universities and higher education centers throughout the country. Admission to the university is through national level university exams (i.e. Concours) and in most programs it is limited to top performers. The departments of economics, development and economic planning are included in the Faculty of Management and Economics. The faculty, currently, has 28 full time professors and more than 600 students, pursuing their education at the graduate level (PhD and Master’s).
University of Tehran is Iran's oldest modern university. The UT has been nicknamed "The mother university of Iran" and it is the symbol of higher education in Iran. Only the best performing students at the national exam can enter into this university's study programs.
Ferdowsi University of Mashhad was founded in 1949 and is today one of the largest and oldest universities across the east of Iran. The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (founded in 1987) currently has 76 faculty members and more than 2000 students. It offers programs to receive Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees in economics, law, accounting, political science, and management.
