Area of Expertise
The department of Transcultural Media Cultures of the Middle East houses research and teaching focused on media of the region with attention to the varied contexts of production, circulation, and reception of a range of screened and/or broadcast texts (television, cinema, news, advertising, social media, gaming, podcast, radio, etc.), both in their domestic settings, and as they circulate within and beyond the Middle East. Media are examined as complex expressions of and contributors to culture, with a pronounced influence on a range of phenomena, including the norms of everyday life, our understanding of history, and the shape and direction of politics. Students are encouraged to engage their studies and subject area both through traditional means and through varied forms of media production. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. Josh Carney. Part of his team is his research assistant Nilgün Yelpaze. The research of her dissertation is kurdish documentary cinema.
