15.10.2023 INCOPS Project Unveils Policy Brief: Optimizing Work-Based Learning in Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies
Publication of the INCOPS Report #6
The INCOPS Project announces the release of its policy brief titled "Integration of Work-based Learning in Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies (PCS): Best Practices and Recommendations," authored by Sergiu Mișcoiu, Ana Pantea, and other INCOPS teams members. This policy brief summarizes the research and collaborative efforts from partner universities, including Babes-Bolyai University, Coventry University, University of Coimbra, University of Kent, University of Marburg (coordinator), and Utrecht University, spanning from 2020 to 2023.
Focused on the domain of Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies (PCS), the INCOPS project aimed to optimize Work-based Learning (WBL) models and align academic objectives with workplace needs. The overarching goal was to bridge the gap between education and employers' requirements while preparing stakeholders for the professional world.
The policy brief presents a comprehensive overview of identified good practices for the seamless integration of WBL in PCS:
- Administration: Highlighting the need for robust support structures for student placements, the brief underscores the importance of comprehensive guidelines and regulations, especially concerning ethical considerations. It emphasizes fostering effective communication and partnerships between academic courses and placement providers to streamline and optimize administrative aspects of WBL.
- Ethics: The report emphasizes the necessity of explicit written policies on ethics and safety during student placements. It stresses the importance of clear communication of these policies to students and stakeholders, ensuring a safe and responsible learning environment.
- Expectations: Setting clear expectations at the onset of placements is pivotal. The policy brief recommends developing a learning agreement, aligning objectives among students, universities, and stakeholders to ensure a beneficial learning experience.
- Communication: Leveraging platforms like Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) within university consortia facilitates effective communication, sharing experiences, and deepening understanding of WBL in PCS among students and educators.
- Feedback: Effective internship programme management involves a comprehensive feedback mechanism. Regular reports from interns and workshops/mentoring by former trainees are recommended to refine future internship experiences and build a supportive network.
This policy brief underscores the significance of integrating these practices into WBL models within PCS, aiming to enhance the educational experience and better prepare students for the challenges of the professional sphere.
