Piloting the Module “Human Rights in Peacebuilding” PR5
Project Result 5 (PR5) centred on piloting components of the “Human Rights and Peacebuilding” module, testing and refining the curriculum with students, educators, and policy/peace practitioners. Led by Marburg, with consortium-wide support, PR5 featured two pilot runs, each focusing on the Crisis Intervention Simulation (CRIS) and related teaching methodologies. These pilots were informed by insights from previous Work Packages and explored the interplay between peacebuilding and human rights in conflict resolution. The first pilot, conducted in the winter semester of 2023, introduced the “EuroCyprus2024” case study, addressing the division of Cyprus through a simulated EU initiative. It included six preparatory lectures delivered by academic and field practitioners, culminating in a two-day simulation where 14 students represented eight organisations in mediated negotiations. Debriefing sessions deepened participants’ understanding of the peacebuilding-human rights nexus, offering qualitative feedback for refining the module.

The second pilot, held in the summer semester of 2024, placed greater emphasis on the CRIS exercise, with fewer preparatory lectures and expanded participation of 23 students, primarily Erasmus participants from Marburg. This iteration incorporated advanced tools like WorkAdventure for virtual interactions and Mattermost for communication, alongside interviews with organisational representatives to enhance realism. Evaluations highlighted the effectiveness of the immersive environment and practical skill development while identifying technical and logistical challenges. PR5’s outputs, including the CRIS guidelines and syllabus, offer a strong foundation for replicating the module beyond SHARINPEACE, promoting innovative approaches to teaching human rights and peacebuilding.
