Application and Admission
Step 1: Get informed
Inform yourself about the Master's program. Consider your goals and decide whether this Master's program can help you reach them.
Preconditions
The M.Sc. Economics, Institutions, and Behavior is designed as a consecutive programme for students with a B.Sc./B.A. in Economics or a B.Sc./B.A. with an Economics major. At the time of application, students should have been awarded at least 72 ECTS credits in economics, business administration, or economics-related methods (e.g. mathematics, statistics). If students do not have completed their course of studies at the time of application, they have to submit a transcript of records including a preliminary grade, calculated on the basis of at least 144 ECTS credits.
A very good command of the English Language (at least level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is a prerequisite.
Step 2: Submit your application
Submit a formal online application within the deadline applicable to a specific term. Applications must be submitted online via uni-assist (start the application here). This is the ONLY acceptable way to apply. Applications are processed by uni-assist, an external service provider. The clearing may take up to four weeks.
Applicants who submit their complete application no later than 5 November / 10 May are eligible for accommodation in one of the University’s residence halls.
Note that the selection committee will consider applications only if they are complete and include all necessary and requested documents. The online application system is available for an extended time period. Submitting your application material as early as possible is recommended for international students who require a visa for Germany.
Documents to be submitted
- Application (online application via the application portal uni-assist)
- The first fundamental university degree including the final grade
- Transcript of records for determining the contents of your previous studies
- The certificate of English skills at a C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by the Council of Europe
- Personal statement, c. 2 pages DIN A4 (German standard format) with 1,800 keystrokes each. In this document the applicant should argue why he/she is suitable for the economics courses including the criteria above.
- Tabular curriculum vitae (about 1 DIN A4 page)
- If available additional certificates for personal suitability for the economics and institution courses including the criteria above
- Applicants from China, Mongolia, and Vietnam must include an APS certificate (please contact your local German embassy)
Important: Documents must be submitted both in the original language and as an officially certified translation into English.
Step 3: Screening
Once uni-assist has validated your application documents and asserted that you meet all formal requirements, a selection process will determine your suitability for admission. Suitability will be determined by three criteria, with a maximum of 8 ‘suitability points’ to be gained:
- Your success in earning your previous degree(s), as reflected by your marks (up to 4 points)
- Your knowledge about economics as demonstrated by advanced and final modules (up to 3 points)
- Your motivation for applying and fit to the program, as reflected in the motivation letter as well as additional criteria (up to 1 point)
An applicant is considered suitable for the program if he or she collects at least 5 points in Steps 3.
