Thorsten Szydlik is a research associate at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Marburg and Member of the Marburg Center for Digital Culture and Infrastructure (MCDCI). His current PhD project focuses on interaction among absentees in virtual environments. Further, he is conducting empirical research on the formation of digital communication within the project "digital aftercare for you" (DiNa4u).

He studied Culture and Society with a special focus on Study of Religion (Bachelor of Arts) and the master's programme "Language – Interaction – Culture" at the University of Bayreuth.  During the master's programm, he was involved in research and teaching mainly on the areas of sociology of knowledge, sociology of religion, and theory of society  a student assistant.

His research intrests include sociology of social worlds, sociology of knowledge, videography, digitalisation, communicative genres, and sociology of religion.
