All about certificates and degree diplomas
Will my certificate be issued automatically when all credits have been earned?
Only if the last examination you take in the degree program is the one in the bachelor's or master’s thesis module will we issue the certificate “automatically” once the grade is available.
In all other cases, please send an e-mail to the member of staff responsible for you in the Examination Office (ideally at the following time: If you have earned 180 CPs (LP) (BA) / 120 CPs (LP) (MA) according to the online transcript of records. Please enter an e-mail address that you will be able to check regularly even after you have exmatriculated.
Please make sure in advance that all your given names stated on your government ID have been entered into the “Rufname” (first name) field in MARVIN. If necessary, apply to change your personal data in MARVIN (under “My degree program/applications”, at the bottom of the page); the Registrar’s Office will be happy to help if you have any questions.
As soon as we have completed your certificate documents and obtained the necessary signatures, we will inform you via the e-mail address you have provided that your certificate is ready to be picked up.
(If you need a certificate of degree completion earlier, we can issue a transcript of records with the note “The bachelor’s/master’s examination has been passed” upon request.)
You can collect your documents from the Examination Office during office hours without a prior appointment.
If you are unable to come in person, you can authorize a person you trust to do so. This authorization must contain your original signature and will be retained by the Examination Office.
How long does it take to create my certificate?
It can take six to eight weeks to prepare the certificate, as various signatures must be obtained. Waiting times are longer during the semester break.
Can the certificate be mailed to me by post?
Yes, we will be happy to send you the certificate documents by post if you send the necessary documents* to the Examination Office (see details below).
Are responsible for the costs and the risks of mailing.
If your documents are damaged or lost in the mail, we will not be able to issue new originals (see “Original certificate lost ...”).
We therefore expressly recommend that you include tracking information when purchasing mailing labels.
* What do we need from you?
Option A: Send us a stamped envelope (we strongly recommend registered mail, European size C4 with cardboard back) (address: Philipps-Universität Marburg, Prüfungsbüro FB 03, Ketzerbach 63, 35032 Marburg), preaddressed with your current address.
Option B: Send us your current postal address and an electronic stamp (for registered mail) by e-mail, either by Internet stamp or by postage code.
What are the components of my certificate? Will I also receive an English-language version?
You will receive the following documents after completing your degree program:
- German-language certificate and an English-language translation (the latter without signature!)
- German-language diploma and an English-language translation (the latter without signature!)
- Diploma supplement (in German with signature and in English without signature)
- Transcript of records/grade overview (German and English-language translation, both with signature)Where can I get certified copies of my certificate?
You can have certified copies made at your municipal office or local court, for example. The Examination Office cannot issue these.
I have lost my original certificate. What should I do?
Unfortunately, we are only allowed to issue your original certificate documents once. If you have lost your documents, you can be issued a “duplicate”.
To obtain this, you have to apply for a duplicate.
The creation of a duplicate will incur fees (as of March 2023: €50.00 per page/new document to be created).
Further information can be obtained from the staff in the Examination Office during our office hours.
