Writing phase & submission, oral examination
When does the processing time for the thesis begin and end?
When registering for the bachelor’s thesis, the start and end dates for each subject are determined uniformly in advance by the Examination Office.
For master's registrations, the start date is the date of receipt of the last required documents.
How should the thesis be structured and formatted?
Please refer to the examination regulations applicable to you for the scope (= number of pages); as a rule, this can be found in the module list (Appendix 2) and the module description; further information on the graduation thesis.
The thesis should have margins wide enough for proofreader’s marks and comments, be printed in a legible font and have a font size of 10–12 with line spacing of 1.5. Apart from that, there are no formal requirements, except, of course, compliance with the generally applicable standards for academic work.
In addition, each thesis (both electronic and hard copies) requires a title page and an affidavit signed by you (> see sample title page and affidavit).
How can I change the topic of the thesis after permission to begin?
If you wish to change the topic of your thesis later, this requires an official application to the Examination Committee (submission to the Examination Office) and the approval of your first reviewer, which you should ideally enclose with the application.
What do I do if I have problems obtaining literature or data?
Due to unforeseen problems with the procurement of literature or data, an extension of 20% of the processing time is possible. To do this, submit a signed, informal application to the Examination Committee with a justification and the signature of your first reviewer and then submit it to the Examination Office.
What should I do if I fall ill after I have been approved to start?
You can find information on this in our FAQs about doctor’s certificate/illness.
How do I submit the thesis (electronically, hard copy, etc.)?
The submission must always be made on time in the form of:
- two printed, bound hard copies. Submission either in person during office hours or by post (the date of the postmark will be used); and
- an electronic version (submission by e-mail via your student account to the applicable person in the Examination Office).
Please remember to attach the signed affidavit to all versions (see above).
How does the final oral examination take place?
A final oral examination will be held only if this is provided for in the final module in accordance with the Degree Program and Examination Regulations applicable to you.
If this is provided for, the examination must take place in the presence of the first reviewer and an expert observer.
