A Matter of Pride - The Influence of Experiencing and Dealing with Pride on Parental Conditional Positive Regard
Parental reactions to a child's academic success and failure play a significant role in their school motivation. An empirical study showed that about one in four children reports that parents show more affection and appreciation than usual following academic success (Steffgen et al., 2022). This parental response, referred to as conditional positive regard, leads to lower quality school motivation and a dependent self-esteem. However, the antecedents of this parental behavior have been scarcely studied. This study aims to examine the role of various facets of pride and the resulting behavioral tendencies of parents in success situations as precursors.
The following theses are available in this project:
- A Bachelor's thesis (already assigned)
- A research paper (State Examination for Teaching Degree): Empirical work, survey of parent-child pairs (questionnaires)
- Two research papers (State Examination for Teaching Degree): Interviews with parents (development of an interview guide, conducting the interviews, analysis)
The theses each address different research questions within the same project.
