The collection serves as a research instrument in the field of linguistics and as teaching materials in the classroom. The collection was initiated and its main parts compiled by the Marburg linguists Georg Wenker and Ferdinand Wrede. Its particular value lies for one in the fact that it enables the analytical comparison of younger and older stages of the German language. Moreover, the collection ensures that language varieties that no longer exist can still be accessed and researched as it is oftentimes the only existing resource. Numerous, sometimes groundbreaking results in the history of the subject are based on these materials.

The collection “Sprachatlas des Deutschen Reichs” [Language Atlas of the German Reich] can be found in digital form in the  OPAC (online public access catalog) of the University of Marburg.
