29.11.2019 Linguistic Escape Room wins teaching award “Lehre@Philipps” 2019!
On 20 November, the University of Marburg honoured creative ideas for concepts and methods of teaching for the third time. Prof. Dr. Rolf Kreyer of the IAA was among the winners!
Rolf Kreyer won the “Lehre@Philipp” award for Germany’s first digital linguistic escape room game: “The Linguist's Lair” guides players virtually through the rooms of Prof. Kreyer’s team. Each room is assigned to a session from the introductory linguistics lectures, for example, Syntax or Pragmatics. The goal is to get the key to the hallway door that leads to freedom following a failed theft of exam tasks. Linguistic puzzles must be solved along the way. Clues and items are hidden in the room itself to provide important information, and lead to more items.
The background to the development of the game is that the subsection of linguistics can be quite challenging to students of English Studies during the initial phase because it is not part of the school curriculum. The game-based approach should particularly motivate students to lay a solid foundation to their studies.
