M.A. Indology
The M.A. in Indology is intended for applicants with a B.A. in Indology. But since “Indology”, “South-Asian Studies” or similar courses may involve various skills and specializations, it is important to check whether these are compatible with our Marburg profile.
The university requires proficiency in German to be demonstrated by the appropriate certificates, as in the case of the B.A. See language requirements.
All applications to M.A.s have to be done via a website called uniassist. There are English help texts that should clarify the formalities:
For accepting students there are two criteria:
- The first involves checking whether the university grade from the country of the student is accepted. This process is formalized and depends on whether the institution, from which you have your degree, is certified as equivalent.
- The second check is whether your previous training, or current interests, match our profile in Marburg. The minimum requirement is a B.A. in a related field (Indology, South Asian Studies etc.), with a good knowledge of Sanskrit. This assessment is done only, when uniassist has checked all formalities. At this point your application is sent to me, and this is why it can be useful to contact me directly before finalizing the application. In the case of domestic students I ask for the B.A. work to see whether our criteria are met, but I am aware that not all academic systems require an M.A. thesis. So if you have a written work on an Indological topic, it would be good to send this to me.
You should be aware that the M.A. Indology in Marburg has a strong focus on Sanskrit, and for the exam a piece of original research has to be written. There are no limitations to the topic, but since the profile is philological, this typically involves editing and translating Sanskrit texts.
