Environs of the Department
The Department of Physics is centrally located in the historic city centre, in the so-called Oberstadt. The historic market square with its 700-year old “Stone House” ("Steinernes Haus"), half-timbered houses (of up to 500 years in age), impressive town hall, and fountain can be reached from the department in just five minutes. Directly above the department is the Landgrave’s castle (“Landgrafenschloss”), which contains the university museum and is surrounded by a park. Other sights, such as the St. Elizabeth Church ("Elisabethkirche"), the Town Church, the historic street “Wettergasse”, the Old University with its historic hall (“Alte Aula”), the University Church, and the “Karzer” are in the immediate vicinity of the campus.
